Author Jeff Scott Note:
As a boy, I was stubborn and often called incorrigible. I saw my mother struggling and, in hindsight, I could have been more helpful, but I was too busy trying to figure out my own life. Becoming the King began as a simple story about a boy struggling in school, but it quickly became a reflection of my own journey and what so many young boys face today. As an adult, I now have answers I didn’t have then, and I’ve woven those lessons into story rather than lecture because boys don’t want to be told what to do. Enter Charlie: a peer young readers can relate to, one who shows them how to face challenges, grow stronger, and find their voice.
But how do you get your son to read a book if he doesn’t want to? Tell him you see leadership in him and that this author may have even written about him. Then say you just want to know if he thinks the story is true. Every boy is curious about himself, and every boy wants to discover his own strength… Help him help you!
